Day Trips from Ocala
One of the best things about living in Ocala is how much is within an easy drive. You can be swimming in a crystal clear spring, wandering a historic downtown, or dipping your toes in the Gulf in about an hour. Here are some of our favorite day trip ideas, all close enough that you will be home for dinner.
The springs circuit
You could spend a whole summer just visiting springs. North Central Florida has one of the highest concentrations of natural freshwater springs anywhere, and several are within easy reach of Ocala. Each one has its own personality. Some are lively swimming holes with big picnic areas, others are quiet, glassy runs best explored by kayak or paddleboard. The water is cool and clear year round, the scenery is pure old Florida, and the drive is half the fun, winding through green countryside and small towns.
Gainesville
About 45 minutes north, Gainesville makes a great day trip. It is a college town, which means great restaurants, interesting shops, live music, museums, and a youthful energy that is a fun change of pace. The natural areas around town are beautiful too, with boardwalks, sinkholes, and wildlife viewing that surprise first time visitors. Spend the morning exploring, grab lunch somewhere local, and browse the shops in the afternoon.
Historic small towns
Some of the most charming day trips are the small historic towns scattered around the region. Antique shops, local diners, historic main streets, and a slower pace that feels like stepping back in time. These towns are perfect for a lazy Saturday: wander the shops, have lunch at a local cafe, and poke around places you would never find if you stayed on the highway.
The Gulf coast
When you need salt air, the Gulf coast is closer than you think. An easy drive west brings you to quiet coastal towns with waterfront restaurants, fishing piers, and sunset views that never get old. It is a completely different vibe from inland Florida, and it makes for a perfect spontaneous day trip. Pack a swimsuit, bring an appetite for fresh seafood, and stay for the sunset if you can.
State parks and nature preserves
The region is dotted with state parks and nature preserves, each offering hiking trails, wildlife viewing, picnic areas, and a chance to see Florida the way it looked a hundred years ago. These are some of the most affordable day trips you can take, and they are wonderful for kids who need to run, climb, and explore. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and keep an eye out for deer, wild turkeys, and all kinds of birds.
Equestrian country
You do not have to leave Marion County for this one, but it feels like a getaway. The horse farm country around Ocala is stunning, with rolling pastures and white fences as far as you can see. Farm tours, equestrian events, and scenic drives through horse country make for a lovely day, even if you have lived here for years and think you have seen it all. Visitors are always amazed. Locals should be too.
Planning tips
A great day trip is mostly about simple planning. Check the weather the night before, pack snacks and water, and have a rough plan but stay flexible. Some of the best day trip moments are unplanned: the roadside produce stand, the little park you spotted from the car, the restaurant the locals recommended.
Check event listings before you go, too. Small towns often have festivals, markets, or concerts on weekends that can turn a nice drive into a memorable day. Timing your trip around something special is always worth it.
Ocala puts you in the middle of it all. Get out and explore.
